Biography

Elizabeth Goshorn Gierosky

Elizabeth was born and raised in Kentucky first coming to the Cleveland area, where she presently resides, to attend the Institute in pursuit of illustration.  Although she succeeded in publishing a children's book, she discovered a greater passion for 3-dimensional form and graduated with a major in sculpture.  After college, Elizabeth married and raised two boys.  During these years, she continued producing work in her home and later in her studio in Chardon.

Elizabeth produced a variety of work which exhibited and sold.  This was a period of exploration with numerous mediums, styles, themes and jobs.  It provided opportunity for exploring teaching and learning situations that ranged from instructing preschool through college aged students including so-directing a gallery as well as competing/producing public art.

By 1990, Elizabeth was experiencing a disillusionment with what she perceived as the self-conscious and often ego-driven business of art and the product focus of teaching art.  Thus began a personal journey to reconnect with the pure spirit, process and mystery of art the way the artist had first come to know it as a child.  Elizabeth was intuitively drawn to the field of Art Therapy and the masters degree followed.  Here the artist found the desired inspiration from the naive patients' work particularly in the psychiatric field.

The work has evolved through the years manifesting in its variety.  Presently Elizabeth's art is predominantly 2-dimensional.  The artist has become involved with painting on canvas to express intimate themes of dreams, psychology conflicts, interpersonal relationships and physical dramas such  as pregnancy, etc.  Although this body of work is figurative, the artist frequently creates abstract work in conjunction as a therapeutic exercise to harmonize the tensions of the more realistic, figurative work.

Elizabeth balances her studio work by practicing as an art therapist at Laurelwood Hospital.  The arrangement satisfies her social-service craving creating a contrast to the energy and isolation of the studio.  The combination stimulates and feeds her personal art work.
